Hempcrete

Interview with

Matt Marino of Homeland Hempcrete

Hempcrete

Why prefabricated Hempcrete?

While there are many benefits to be gained from a hempcrete building there are a number of drawbacks that can make it difficult to incorporate the material into a project and more challenging to adopt for the building industry as a whole. Our goal with prefabrication is to maintain the benefits of using a natural building material like hempcrete, while reducing some of the constraints, such as: duration onsite to build, manual labor, product quality and consistency, weather delays.

Hempcrete

What changes have you seen taking place in this arena over the last few years?

There has been significant change in various areas of the industry in just the last few years, and its exciting to see the progress that has been gained. When we were first starting back in 2018 it was a real challenge just to find raw materials (both hemp hurd and binder) suitable for construction. Since then there are numerous suppliers and options available around the US and we have had the opportunity to work with a number of them.
Another significant change is that we are seeing more and more people looking into hempcrete as a building material, many of which are from outside of the industry. When we first got started most of the projects we worked on were for people already involved in the hemp industry looking for more ways to incorporate the plant into their lives. We are now seeing a majority of interest from folks that just want clean and sustainably built homes, which is really exciting to see.
